In his Creation is Destruction series, the artist intentionally damages mirrored metal plates—striking them with axes, shooting them, or hammering them with a ball peen. This act of destruction serves to quell the narcissistic impulse in artist and viewer alike to gaze at one’s reflection. In doing so, Franzen initiates a ritual of transformation, fostering personal evolution beyond surface identity.
